(*Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t read Divergent yet.)
One of the reasons Divergent is one of the best books is because of the love of Tris and Tobias. There are a lot of good scenes so I listed everything that, for me, is sweet and memorable. It was a hard time picking out scenes to exclude in this list but some just have to be swiped off, for awhile. Be ready to get all blushed up for this scenes.
So here it goes:
“I would’ve fallen first face on to the wood floor if he had not caught me.”
10. The First Meeting
Oh, what else? Of course the very first time Tris and Tobias met. The very first time they laid eyes on each other. Out of all the people in there, Tobias was the one who caught her. It was magical (in a much serious tone). It definitely meant something to be than just coincidence.
“‘I’m surprised you know that,’ I say quietly, ‘since you left halfway through my one and only fight.’
‘It wasn’t something I wanted to watch,’ he says.”
9. Can’t Stand It
During this time, Tobias is still so snob to Tris. That’s why Tris found it amusing to know that Tobias was pretty much paying attention to her, particularly. Isn’t that sweet? Someone watching you silently from the background that’s as handsome as Tobias.
“‘I came to find out what you think you’re doing.’
‘I’m seeking higher ground,’ I say. ‘I don’t think I’m doing anything.’”
8. The Ferris Wheel
Admit it, after this scene, you never looked at the ferris wheel the same way again. The fact that Tobias followed her silently to look for her (which he won’t admit because as we all know, she trusts Tris too much with her decisions) even though Tobias is afraid of heights! It was a romantic moment to be up so high feeling the wind with only the person you important to you. And it was one of the first times that they’re together laughing and just being simple and real. They probably bonded there.
“It’s a cruel joke, but it’s hard for me to fight off a smile. That is, until Four’s eye shifts to my arm around Will’s, and all the humor drains from them.”
7. Get Jealous
Even Tobias, oh he’s just like any other boy who get’s jealous. Tobias is a very rare guy. He’s not someone you find just around the corner. But yes, he gets jealous too. And this happens after Tris got groped by Peter and his crew with Al. And Tobias was there to save her, as he always do.
“‘There’s one of my instructors.’ I lean closer to her and say, ‘He’s kind of intimidating.’
‘He’s handsome,’ she says.”
6. Meet The Parent
In a relationship, one of the most important thing to do is to introduce that person to your parent. Plus the first reaction of Tris’ mom to Tobias was that he’s handsome. We get all giddy at this part, at the same time suspiciouc because of Tobias reaction which means there is a much bigger secret about him yet to be revealed.
“..’You look good Tris.’
His words surprised me, and my heart leaps. I wish it didn’t, because judging by the way his eyes slide over mine, he has no idea what he’s saying. I laugh. ‘Do me a favor and stay away from the chasm, okay?’
‘Of course.’ He winks at me.”
5. True Side
Don’t forget that Tobias is only eighteen and Tris is sixteen. No matter what they do or what they’ve gone through, they are still very young. They are carrying a heavy burden on their shoulders when they should’ve been just sweethearts sneaking around the school for stolen kisses. So this scene really stayed with me because after all, at the end of the day, is their hidden selves looking for fun and flirting (with some sweet favors).
“‘Since you’re here,’ he says, without looking over his shoulder, ‘you might as well go in with me.’
I bite my lip. ‘Into your fear landscape?’
4. Fear Landscape
Mystery seems to revolve around Tobias. He never lets anyone through the walls he build around him. So when he let Tris go through his fear landscape, we know that Tris is more than just a student for him. This is where Tris figured out what he’s real name is, where his from, and some of his deepest, darkest secrets. What makes it sweeter is going through his fears together and Tris is there with him. And of course, don’t forget the sweet gestures they made there.
“‘Fine.’ He leans his face closer to mine, his eyes focusing on my chin, and on my lips, and on my nose. ‘I watched you because I like you.’
He says it plainly, boldly, and his eyes flick up to mine. ‘And don’t call me Four, okay? It’s nice to hear my name again.’”
After the fear landscape, Tris got closer to Tobias because she feels like they are on the same boat. The experience is more than a kiss that lets them get attached to each other. Tobias also got amused with Tris and how she is always ready to defend him even if it means getting her hurt. This results to Tobias, laying his feelings out to Tris. That simple.
“The shot doesn’t come. He stares at me with the same ferocity but doesn’t move. Why doesn’t he shoot me? His heart pounds against my palm, and my own heart lifts. He is Divergent. He can fight this simulation. Any simulation.
‘Tobias,’ I say. ‘It’s me.’
‘Tris,’ he says. And it’s him again. His mouth collides with mine.”
2. Against The Odds
After Jeanine injected a simulation to Tobias, it began to control his thoughts by letting him think his friends are the enemies and vice versa. The moment Tris stopped fighting and just surrendered herself (I cried on that part, honestly) because she can’t kill Tobias, it was unbearable. But Tobias really loves Tris because after everything, he woke up and found himself again. That, for me, is one of the greatest measure for love.
“‘I have something to tell you,’ he says.
‘I might be inlove with you.’ He smiles a little. ‘I’m waiting until I’m sure to tell you, though.’
‘That’s sensible of you,’ I say, smiling too. ‘We should find some paper so you can make a list or a chart or something.’
I feel his laughter against my side, his nose sliding along my jaw, his lips pressing behind my ear.
‘Maybe I’m already sure,’ he says, ‘and I just don’t want to frighten you.’
I laugh a little. ‘Then you should know better.’
‘Fine,’ he says. ‘Then I love you.’
1. The Three Words
The number one spot goes to this! Mention one person who thought this wasn’t sweet. No need for fireworks or balloons or flowers. Just Tobias and his gestures can already lift a heart. Simple and direct approach. Clean swipe. That’s what it takes to have the heart of Tris and sweep of off her feet even after a very long traumatic day.
