Over the past few days, a few pertinent and fun facts about Veronica Roth‘s Divergent Trilogy have been revealed by Roth herself. Here are five of those.
- Book Two (Insurgent) teasers
Veronica Roth’s Twitter page is a great source for little tidbits of information – in fact, many of the developments in this list come from it – and one of the things she has shared on the page are Insurgent (Book Two in the Divergent Trilogy - expected in the spring of 2012) teasers.
- Teaser 1: “Did you just call me BEATRICE?”
- Teaser 2: “You look older.” “Yes, well, the passage of time tends to do that to a person.”
- Teaser 3: “The other factions are far more prominent in the next book, since Tris is less secluded.”
The first two teasers seem to be draft quotes for Insurgent while the third seems to be a plot teaser. Thoughts on these?
- The L Train
Roth also shared this picture, noting it was “one of the el trains that inspired the divergent trains!”
Must be an exciting route, somehow! (Note: More on the Chicago locations used in Divergent has been attempted here.)
- Billboard Inspiration
Speaking of inspiration, Publishers Weekly has a “Spring 2011 Flying Start” feature on Veronica Roth and Divergent in which she revealed one of her inspirations for the story.
On a long drive from her home near Chicago to Carleton College in Minnesota—which she attended as a freshman before transferring to Northwestern—Veronica Roth saw on a billboard an image of a person leaping off a building.
“I wondered why someone would do that,” she recalls. “At the time, I was also taking Intro to Psych and we were studying the treatment of phobias by repeated exposure to fears.”
She’s mentioned how psychology coursework came into play when writing Divergent before, but a billboard? Who knew! Be sure to read the full post, though, because she also reveals a lot about why she chose to write Divergent from the perspective of “Tris” rather than the original voice of “Four.”
- Fan-casting is way off (and other character details)
If you’ve been keeping up with this page, you’ll know that there have been a lot of fan-casting attempts for the character of “Tris” made here (e.g., the latest came from readers, suggesting Chloe Moretz or Emily Browning), but they were all way off from what Veronica Roth herself saw. According to her, the closest actress, looks-wise, to “Tris” is Mia Wasikowska. Some photos of the actress are attached in the slideshow. Can you see her as “Tris”? (Note: Roth seems in the same boat as everyone else when it comes to “Four” because she said, “As for Four, I really have no idea.” So those fan-casting ideas we’ve been throwing around for that character are still relevant!)
- Little-known actors for the Divergent film, please
The last tidbit of information to come down about Divergent lately is a bit of what Veronica Roth hopes to see happen with the pending Divergent film. When asked who she’d like to see in the Divergent film (Note: Summit Entertainment has optioned the property and recently moved forward in selecting a screenwriter), she said, “Honestly, my preference would be for little-known faces. I like to see that in movies.”
So, what do you think of these new tidbits, especially the Insurgent teasers?
